FEAR FACTORY Is A 'Tighter' Unit And 'More Efficient Songwriting Team' Without DINO CAZARES
September 17, 2006FEAR FACTORY drummer Raymond Herrera spoke with Time Off magazine about the band's brief split in 2002, and reforming a few months later without founding member Dino Cazares. "There were personal issues between Dino and the rest of the band which just got worse and worse over time," Herrera confided. "Basically we couldn't go on like we were and something had to give. It was a terrible situation, personally and professionally. I mean, I was friends with Dino since we were 18, and now I haven't spoken to him in three years. Still, in a way, that schism ensured our long-term survival. FEAR FACTORY is now a tighter unit and a more efficient songwriting team."
This renewed sense of vigor in the FEAR FACTORY camp has manifested itself on wax, with 2004's "Archetype", and last year's "Transgression" steps above the poorly received "Digimortal".
"'Digimortal' was a cut-and-paste album that lacked good songwriting structure," Herrera admitted. "Our last two records, on the other hand, have been fun to make and I'm really proud of both of them. 'Archetype' took our sound back to its roots: it's a really heavy and uncompromising record. On 'Transgression' we tried to do something a little different, it's a record that adds more melody to the mix and a more experimental approach to songwriting. I love writing and performing the heavier stuff but I'm glad we spread our wings with 'Transgression'."
After their current world tour winds down, FEAR FACTORY will retreat to the studio to record a new album — although various members of FEAR FACTORY are currently working on a range of weird and wonderful side projects.
"I've just purchased a recording studio with B-Real of CYPRESS HILL where we are recording," Herrera says. "We call our project KILLING ZONE and it's a hybrid of FEAR FACTORY and CYPRESS HILL… I also regularly work on music for a heap of video games. I just did Battlefield 2 for X-Box. Burton is also involved in a number of projects. He has a project called ASCENSION OF THE WATCHERS, which is very different to what we do in FEAR FACTORY… He's also been doing some producing as has our guitarist Christian who will be producing the new BLEED THE SKY record later this year."
